Week 3: Down to Business.

Image
Hey there guys, Adam here again with Angry Ghost Games. This week we've all been hard at work getting what was worked on last week finalized and into the game. Ryan has UV unwrapped our main character, Bob, ready for texturing. Isn't that just something. These strange shapes form a 2D version of the 3D model from last week, and will be painted over in order to give colour to our main character. At that point, all that is left for them is rigging and animation before they can be added to the game at long last. Goodbye pills, you will be missed. Ryan has also worked on getting controller support hooked up in game. Whilst this was probably something that would have been worked on later down the line, it was the highest requested fix following our most recent playtest. There was also the problem that having two players surrounding one keyboard; wrestling for control of it was almost as much of a game as Magefest itself and thus required fixing. Connor has been working...

Team Introduction: Josh

Hi! I'm Josh, I'm sure you all know me. My role for this project is sort of the flex role. My strengths are in Photoshop and game design, I've always been a hobby Photoshop user hoping to GO PRO, this translates to me being best suited for a texturing role, though I have the dank fundamentals of 3D modeling. On the game design side I play Smash a lot, go to tourneys and shizz too so I think I can use my religious devotion for this game as a good frame of reference for game balance and level design. I love me some video games, especially Smash Bros, though I love single player games too like God of War, Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon and indie games like Ori and Hollow Knight. I also love computers and tech! This semester my role is pretty much the same, so far with a focus on UI and later down the track I will again work with Connor on level design unless we switch it up and another member takes that on. Hyped to be part of the end game for Magefest and hyped to be working with o...

Week 2: Settling Back into Things

Image
Hey guys, Adam here from Angry Ghost Games. This week was the second week of development on Magefest, and after having everyone settle into their roles, we got to work. Ryan continued his work on our player character model, Bob. Below I have posted a turnaround of the character, who is nearing the end of the 3D modelling phase. Whilst this model will probably be tweaked in the coming weeks, it is near finished, and is more or less ready to move onto the texturing and animation phases in preparation for implementation into the game. Jess, one of our two new members has been hard at work, creating concept art for parts of the game that haven't been finalized yet. Firstly the UI, which has been absent from the game up until now. As you can see, the designs are compact and simple to understand whilst still retaining a lot of detail. Jess has also been working on potential main menu designs, creating some simple mockups which fit with the characters and story wi...

Team Introduction: Adam

Hey guys. My name is Adam, and on top of being the Marketing and PR lead for our game, I'll be the one running this blog and therefore the connection between you guys and our new party game, Magefest. I would consider myself to be mostly competent in many aspects of game development, with a particular preference for 2D art, as well as level and mechanical design. I spend most of my free time playing video games, or reading. My favorite games are generally RPG's like Pokemon or Dragon quest, or Turn Based Tactical games like Wargroove or Fire Emblem (particularly Three Houses). I generally enjoy trying to max out stats, and other grindy stuff that people tend to find annoying, and like to either plan out my play sessions in advance, or occasionally turn my brain off with a game like Dynasty Warriors. I hope that following our progress making Magefest is interesting to you guys. I'll be updating you guys weekly (on either Sunday or Monday), so make sure to keep checking i...

Team Introduction: Ryan

Hi! My name is Ryan and I’m the Producer for our game, Magefest. I am most proficient at 3D modelling and writing, although I’ve also been delving into the frustratingly twisted cave that is programming. I enjoy reading, writing and gaming, which means I’m usually found tucked away inside my room trying to avoid as much sunlight as possible. Some of my favourite games include Dontnod’s Life is Strange series and the Borderlands series — I love games with complex, well-written narratives as well as games that can make me laugh. Of course I also enjoy party games, with titles such as Smash Bros Ultimate and Crawl being some of my personal favourites.

Team Introduction: Christina

Hi everyone, I’m Christina and I’m taking on the role of Playtest Lead along with also helping create/source the sound effects needed for Magefest. I guess my main strengths lie in 2D concept art and illustrations, 3D modelling, and texturing but on the side I also have skills and interests in screen production such as cinematography, video editing and sound design. I work a lot in programs such as Photoshop, Maya, ZBrush, Unity, Adobe Premiere and After Effects. Outside of Uni I work part time as a video editor but I also enjoy reading, watching movies and gaming when I can. I enjoy playing games such as Kingdom Hearts, The Witcher, Skyrim, Dragon Age, DanganRonpa, and so much more. I really love the type of games that have engaging stories and lore surrounding them, having great character design is also a plus for me. Even though I came late to the game, I’m excited to help out wherever I can with this project!

Team Introduction: Jess

Hi! I’m Jess. I am an artist working on this project. I mainly focus on 2D concept art and design but will be helping with anything the team needs from textures to animation. Over the years I have worked mainly with Photoshop, Maya, Unity and have just started looking into Substance painter for texturing 3D models. I enjoy an array of different game types from horror to fantasy RPG’s. The games I enjoy most are ones with open worlds and some sort of building system, such as Don’t stave, Ark, Subnautica, fallout and 7 days to die.

Team Introduction: Connor

Heya, my name is Connor and I'm an alcoholic... er i mean the Art Director for our game! My main skill set surrounds mostly 2D concept art, splash art and illustration. I am also quite confident in 3D animation, screen production, some 3D modelling and creative writing. (although not confident I am happy to be pressured into trying out some coding.... :s) While uni and work take up most of my time, I enjoy reading, watching movies, sleeping (god how I miss sleep), playing rugby, DnD, and of course playing video games. I love and appreciate games with unique art styles, strong story lines, amazing sound tracks and games with an overbearing amount of cutesy shit... Looking at you Pokemon. Other games I adore are: The Last of Us, Cup Head, Breath of the Wild, Journey, Smash Bros and God of War. I am super excited to get to work on this project! :D Time to panic on these platforms <3

Introduction to Magefest

Hey guys, welcome to Angry Ghost Games, and to the creation of our first game, "Magefest". The game is a party game, similar to games in the Super Smash Bros series, with more of a focus on platforming than fighting. Players will take control of wizard siblings, fighting over a ticket to Magefest bought by their mother. Players are unable to directly attack or affect the other players, and instead must apply magical effects to the platforms underfoot: enhancing them with healing magic; setting them on fire, or just blowing them up entirely. Here we will be posting anything to do with the development of the game, plus screenshots and GIFs/videos of the game and the process, once it is up and running. On this blog, you will be kept up to date with weekly posts looking into the development of the game, including screenshots, GIFs and videos of both the development of the game, as well as gameplay itself, once the game is in a more complete state. As this blog has been st...
