Team Introduction: Callum
Yes, hello, my name is Callum. I'm a sound and screen student at Murdoch University. Sound effects editing and sound design are my main jams. As well as sound design and cinematic compositions, I have also been making dance music for about six years. Electronic music definitely influences the music I make for motion picture, especially in terms of my instrument choices. I like to think that the skills in film sound and dance music are interchangeable, so at every moment I'm working on something related to sound, it all counts towards my other aspirations as well. Whilst I have many idols for dance music production (Martin Garrix, Dvbbs), I generally reference specific productions in the cinematic and interactive landscape, rather than the individuals who create them.
After graduating at the end of this semester, my main focus will be on dance music production and sound design for film. Game audio and other interactive sound (sound art installations) are areas that I would like to keep intermittently in touch with. My more immediate plan is to create three separate reels for my portfolio (redesigned, original and contest). I am also planning on completing a couple of work placements in Perth before the end of this year.
Magefest and another game I am currently sound designing for, The Little Match Girl, are my first official productions in game audio. This is the first time I've composed music for a game and also my first time composing medieval-esque music, which will be a huge challenge; however I am excited to see how I come out of it. Personally, my approach to composing this soundtrack is referencing scores for films set in medieval times that revolve around magic. The main challenge for me is to interpret these references into a soundtrack for the game world. The team have given me a strong aesthetic to work with and plenty of reference tracks to inform me. The main focus of the soundtrack is to keep things moving very fast throughout all levels. Each of the three levels require a specific musicality, whilst still maintaining a cohesive brand that people with denote to Magefest.
I would like to thank the creators of Magefest for enlisting their trust in me to complete this project. I'm so excited to see what people think of the game and the music that accompanies it.
